A newspaper holiday party

The Oakland Tribune celebrated its first office holiday party since leaving the historic Tribune tower in downtown Oakland earlier this year. It was, of course, bittersweet since significantly less colleagues are with us now due to layoffs (and the Musical Chairs game that is "newsroom shifting.")

But, "celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain." -- DMB


Martin led the crowd in a fully rehearsed holiday rap. He's actually a professional musician in a jazz band, so it was far more polished than the average impromptu flow. He is currently the managing editor of the paper, but at one time was also my college professor for News Bureau. It's a good feeling to grow up in the "family" of Bay Area journalists.

Myself and the talented (and incredibly nice) Katy Newton, who recently got a job at the Los Angeles Times with her husband Sean. They passed a few responsibilities for our award-winning package "Not Just a Number" to me and I'm a little intimidated, but I've got plenty help to maintain it. They're going to be quite the amazing videographer/editor team down there. :)
